Rachel Hannan

For the past few years Rachel Hannan’s work has focussed on landscapes of the Blue Mountains and NSW; often alla prima, sometimes plein air, and more studied studio works, all oil on canvas. In 2018 she was a finalist in the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award (Campbelltown Arts Centre), Calleen Art Award (Cowra Regional Gallery) and the Kangaroo Valley Arts Prize. Recently she had solo exhibitions at Day Gallery Blackheath 2018, Braemar Gallery 2017 and has been included in many group shows. I paint what is around me; landscapes, people, interiors and imagined places made up of reflections on these things. I paint how these things make me feel, both in the moment and after periods of contemplation, rather than trying to portray a copy of something I have seen. My work is sometimes spontaneous and made in one sitting or can take months of layering with glazed and impasto paint.

Rachel Hannan was born in 1971 overlooking Newcastle Beach, NSW.

After completing her Fine Arts Degree at Newcastle University in 1992 with a High Distinction in Painting Rachel directed her energies towards the performing arts where she began her successful career as a jazz vocalist and recording artist and has been teaching vocals since 1996.

Rachel maintained her art practice through one-off wearable art pieces, sculptural light fittings and handmade painted jewellery.
In 2008 Rachel returned to the studio and oil painting with a renewed freedom and a relaxed, less analytical approach.

In 2013 Rachel began working as an Expressive Arts Therapist and Counsellor both privately and at Gateway Family Services, Blaxland and Katoomba NSW.
She has recently started working with ceramics.
